Music gives meaning to life
and life to meaning.
Welcome to the world of The Chosen
and to the music that embodies
their emotions and
their lives.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Music plays an important part in these stories. From melancholic melodies to crashing crescendos, it enhances the mood and emotions in every scene. It provides a sound buffer, preventing the outer world from intruding into my inner one. It helps me to feel the emotions of the story inhabitants and bring those emotions to the page.
Many times I’ll discover a song that belongs to a specific scene after the scene has been written, then I’ll play the song over and over during subsequent editing sessions, using its energy to breath more life into the scene.
Each book has its own soundtrack, its own mood. I wish I could share all of the music with you, but in many cases that is not possible due to copyright restrictions. I hope to bring audio to this page in the future; for now, please take the time to look up the artists and listen to their music. ~RM ~
WATCHER
One of the most influential music artists on the writing and editing of Watcher was Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Trent believes in artists sharing their talents and generously makes his tracks available for download on the NIN remix site. The resulting blend of Trent’s music with that of various remix artists can be amazingly beautiful and moving. Along with Trent’s instrumental originals and his own remixes, these songs created much of the background tone for Watcher. My favorite is the haunting NIN/Justin St.Charles remix, “Leaving Hope, Still” which beautifully captures the mood of Sunny and Nicolas's first meeting and is their theme song.
Enjoy.

RUNNER
Some songs on this list belong to a specific character; others to a scene. For me, the most important part of a song is the mood it creates and enhances, whether it does that through the melody, the rhythm, or the tone. The lyrics may or may not have anything to do the scene, but the emotion with which they are sung does. And when the words in the song align with the words on the page, the effect is magnified.
Sunny’s emotions are all over the map in this book, and the songs for her vary, from quiet laments to proclamations of strength. Sandy is epitomized with Leona Lewis’s "I See You.” Taz’s old-school biker attitude harkens back to The Allman Brothers and The Doors. And Chia—poor Chia—gives her frustration and outrage a voice in Skrillex’s “First of the Year.” Though the words don’t quite fit, the tone most certainly does.
Colin continues to slip through these stories with honor and elegance, belying the steel beneath, and in the process, winning the hearts of more than a few readers. The Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi best captures Colin’s essence in “Life” and “Two Trees.”
Enjoy.
